Romania immigration — FAQ

Answers to the questions foreign nationals ask about Romanian residence

From residence permit timelines to CNP registration and work authorisation — the essentials covered briefly.

Non-EU nationals need a long-stay visa (type D) matching the purpose of stay — employment, business, studies, family reunification — followed by a residence permit issued by the General Inspectorate for Immigration. EU citizens register their residence directly without requiring a visa.

After submitting a complete application, the General Inspectorate for Immigration typically issues the residence permit within 30 days. Adding the prior long-stay visa stage, non-EU nationals should plan for a total timeline of 2 to 4 months from first application to permit in hand.

Romania allows non-EU investors to obtain residence based on investment in a Romanian company. The investment must meet statutory thresholds and include job creation commitments verified by ARICE. We handle both the business structuring and the visa application.

The CNP (Cod Numeric Personal) is Romania's personal identification number — required for banking, utilities, tax filings and most administrative procedures. Foreigners receive a CNP when they're issued a residence permit, or separately through ANAF for specific tax obligations.

Yes. Family reunification residence permits are available for spouses and minor children of a Romanian resident. Requirements include proof of relationship, adequate accommodation, and means of subsistence. We handle family applications together with the main applicant to keep the process coordinated.

Right-to-work depends on the permit type. A residence permit for employment allows work for the specific employer listed. A business residence permit allows work within the investor's own Romanian company. Other permits have separate work-authorisation requirements we can advise on.
